James
Whilst in his 1st year at university James realised the football industry was about not what you know, but who you know & who knows you.
He focused on networking and was invited up to several clubs up & down the country Including Burnley, West Ham, Cardiff & Southampton.
He then leveraged his network to land a role within Player Care at Portsmouth FC Women.
James now helps students and people with a passion for football to break into the football industry.
''Early into my time at university I was going to drop out. I looked at football as a gated community and thought there was no chance of me breaking into it.
I would send 200 emails to clubs & ask another 50 people on LinkedIn if there were any opportunities at their club.
I soon found out this was not the way to do it.
After months of researching I learned that there was a method to networking and then I understood how to leverage that network to get experience & to create opportunities for myself.
Alongside networking I also focused on building my personal brand, gaining experience, working on my continued professional development and optimised my CV.
Over the next year things changed and I visited 7/8 clubs and spoke to over 30 clubs. I got my first role at Portsmouth FC whilst in my first year at university and have been there for 2 years.
It is so important to really force your way into this industry, by that I mean put yourself out there constantly, work on your personal brand and become a nuisance to people.
If you do not do that then you will struggle to break in.
I now help students break into football by highlighting what mistakes I made, make sure the do not make the same ones & show them exactly what they need to do to reach their goals''
